Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia have clinched their fourth consecutive Paris Major title at Roland Garros, Paris, on Sunday (September 13), overcoming
Federico Chingotto and Alejandro Galan 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 in an extraordinary final on Philippe-Chatrier. The victory marked their 40th Premier Padel title as a pair and a strong comeback following their early exit in Madrid. The final drew a packed crowd, with 81,000 fans attending the tournament across the week. Coello and Tapia took early control of the match by claiming the opening set with a break at 5-3. Chingotto and Galan hit back by taking the second 6-4 before moving a break ahead in the deciding game. With the title within reach, the World No. Coello and Tapia broke Chingotto and Galan as the latter duo served for the match before dominating the deciding tie-break 7-1 to seal the title. This was their 27th title in 40 editions of the Premier Padel tournament, further underlining the scale of their rivalry with Chingotto and Galan. If the men's final went down to the wire, the women's contest was over almost as soon as it began. Third seeded Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero swept aside Claudia Fernandez and Martina Calvo 6-2, 6-0 in an hour and 11 minutes to claim their third title of the year, following victories in Riyadh and Valencia, where they won their first Major. Sanchez and Ustero, who were also finalists in Rome, gave Fernandez and Calvo little room to respond. Despite the defeat, reaching their first Major final was a significant achievement for Fernandez and Calvo who have played only four tournaments together.
'We deserve this title'
For Ustero, the victory was particularly significant after an injury forced her to miss the Malaga and Pretoria tournaments.
“I couldn’t have chosen a better way to win my first Major,” said Ustero. “We deserve this title for what we are doing this season. We played a perfect final”.
Sanchez also praised their level and the setting.
“When Andrea suffered her injury, we were playing at a good level, but that’s part of sport,” added Sanchez. “Winning here, on a court like Philippe-Chatrier, while playing at our best level, is really special. Now it’s time to celebrate and then think about the next tournaments”.
