FIFA World Cup 2026 witnessed one of the biggest shocks of the tournament, as Norway snatched a 2-1 win over five-time champions Brazil in the Round of 16.
This meant that the mighty Brazil team were knocked out of the tournament, having failed to qualify for the quarter-final of the tournament for the first time since 1990. Neymar, who was the most experienced player of the side, witnessed a massive heartbreak after the final whistle as he was seen absolutely distraught. In fact, the Brazillian icon has now dropped a massive bombshell, as he has announced his retirement from internatinal football immediately after the heartbreaking loss. In a heartfelt message after the game, Neymar seemingly confirmed the decision in an emotional speech. In fact, he mentioned that the MetLife Stadium was the very first ground where he made his international debut and he played his last Brazil game at this very venue. “I tried. I tried. It started here at Met Life stadium and I finished here. It is now over”, he said.
A Consolation Goal For Neymar
In the final minute of stoppage time in the second half, Brazil were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the box by a Norweigan defender. Neymar, who was introduced in the 70th minute, coolly netted the ball, thus salvaging a consolation goal back for his team.
Neymar's goal was his 9th in FIFA World Cup history, and this proved to be the last time he ever scored playing for Brazil.
Erling Haaland Powers Norway To Quarter-Final
Erling Haaland powered Norway to a stunning 2-1 upset over Brazil to send them to their first-ever FIFA World Cup quarter-final.
After a tense and scoreless first half where Orjan Nyland brilliantly saved a penalty from Bruno Guimaraes, Haaland broke the deadlock in the 79th minute with a towering header before doubling the advantage with a decisive second strike right on the 90-minute mark.
Brazil threw everything forward in a desperate bid to keep their World Cup dreams alive, but their star-studded attack ultimately struggled to break down Norway's resilient defense. Neymar managed to convert a late penalty deep into stoppage time. Noway went through to a quarter-final clash against the winner of the Mexico versus England tie.
