During his career as a captain, he registered a 55% win in ODIs
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is undoubtedly the best captain India has ever produced in terms of
lifting titles. Be it ICC or domestic, Dhoni’s trophy cabinet as a captain is unparalleled. After a glorious career, he retired and now spends his time in his hometown of Ranchi, away from the limelight and complexities of cricket.
However, when Shubman Gill was recently announced as the ODI captain against Australia over Rohit Sharma, disappointed fans questioned the chief selectors. The team’s selection has also been criticised. Therefore, we thought, what would the great Mahendra Singh Dhoni have done if he were the present captain?
We asked ChatGPT to analyse Dhoni’s ODI career as captain, his strategy and thought process, and come up with the MS XI against Australia for the ODI series. Scroll down to check out the result.

Regarding Dhoni’s captaincy, ChatGPT said, “Dhoni’s “cool” persona is well-known. He rarely panicked, even if things weren’t going well. That helped in tight run chases or tricky phases (e.g., middle overs) — giving confidence to bowlers and batsmen. He was not rigid about batting positions. He might send in a “finisher” early or promote someone like Yuvraj Singh or Dinesh Karthik in specific match situations.”
ChatGPT also highlighted the use of spinners in the middle overs, death bowling management, unconventional field placements, and the promotion of finishing traits, among others – all traits that worked in Dhoni’s favour.
Dhoni’s XI
As per ChatGPT, for the upcoming Australia ODI series, Dhoni would’ve selected Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya/Rinku Singh, Dhoni (C & WK), Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Md. Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.
The AI suggests that Dhoni’s approach would be to have a batting lineup that’s capable of scoring runs from as low as no. 7 or no. 8. Power hitting would be one of the key traits towards the end of India’s batting innings. The former captain would also make use of more spin but employ pacers in the middle order to balance the load or offer relief in the death overs.
Overall, ChatGPT believes Dhoni’s XI would win the series 2-1 if all the cogs of the machinery work together.
