Team India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyerhas revealed why he left Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after guiding them to the Indian Premier League (IPL) title win in 2024. In the 17th IPLseason, Shreyas allied
with Gautam Gambhir, who served the Men in Pink as mentor. The pair did a fabulous job together and delivered the coveted trophy to their team after 10 years. However, things didn’t work out before the IPL 2025 auction as Kolkata and Iyer parted ways. Media speculations were that Iyer demanded a high amount from Knight Riders to serve the team but the three-time IPL champions refused the 30-year-old’s demand.
In a recent interview with GQ, Iyer disclosed he left the KKR camp because he wasn’t involved in the decision-making process of the side despite handling the reins of the side. “I was part of the conversation, but wasn’t completely in the mix. I’ve had to work my way up to get to the position I am in now,” said Shreyas.
Shreyas Iyer’s record for KKR
Shreyas Iyer served KKRfrom 2022 and 2024 and during this period, he played 29 matches for the team and scored 752 runs at a strike rate of 140.03. In 2023, he couldn’t participate due to a back injury and in his absence, Nitish Rana handled the captaincy mantle. In 2024, when he returned to the side, he played a crucial role in KKR’s title triumph. He scored 351 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 146.86.
This year, his batting performance got better while representing Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025. Under his leadership, Punjab concluded their campaign as runners-up and Iyer ended up as the most successful batter for the side with 604 runs in 17 matches at a breathtaking strike rate of 175.07.
