Cameroonian international Andre Onana could leave Manchester United with reports suggesting the club has reached a verbal agreement with Trabzonspor, as the transfer window stays open until September 12
in Turkey. The 29-year-old goalkeeper has been benched for United’s first three Premier League fixtures, appearing to have slipped down the pecking order under manager Ruben Amorim. According to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have now agreed a loan move that would see Onana join Turkish side Trabzonspor. However, the final decision is to be made by the player himself.
Earlier, the Red Devils confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on Deadline Day. This signing has put Onana's future at Old Trafford dicey. However, Onana’s situation has worsened, as he was overlooked for the first three Premier League matches with Ruben Amorim opting for Altay Bayindir instead. His only outing this season came in the Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby Town, where he was culpable for one of the goals conceded.
Andre Onana's struggle with Manchester United since joining
One of the reasons why Manchester United is keen to let go Andre Onana is his inability to perform consistently. They purchased Onana for £43.8 million in 2023. The ex-Inter Milan goalkeeper joined United carrying a strong reputation. Just a season before his move to Old Trafford, he was instrumental in helping the Italian club reach the Champions League final. Erik ten Hag identified him as the key figure to transform United’s build-up play from the back, but it didn't quite materialise well.
Further road for Onana seems to be quite bumpy. At the end of last season, Amorim defended Onana, saying he made more mistakes than the Cameroonian international goalkeeper. "If you look at the season, I've made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months. There's nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play. But I'm really confident in Andre," the Portuguese said at the time, but it doesn't seem to be the case now.
