Sergio Busquets, the former Spain and Barcelona captain, has confirmed his retirement from professional football at the end of the ongoing Major League Soccer (MLS) season in December with Inter Miami.
The 37-year-old has been one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, winning 32 trophies during his time at FC Barcelona, which included nine La Liga and three UEFA Champions League titles apart from clinching the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship with Spain.
Notably, after leaving Barcelona in 2023, Sergio Busquets joined Inter Miami, where he has played with former FC Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez. During his time at FC Barcelona, he made a whopping 722 appearances, the third most appearances in the history of the club, while for Spain, he went on to compete in 143 matches before retiring in December 2022 after the conclusion of the last FIFA World Cup.

In one of his latest posts on the official Instagram account, Sergio Busquets said the following about his plan to retire, “I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It's been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of. I'm retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful. Thank you all very much, see you soon.”
Moreover, it was on Wednesday, September 24, when Inter Miami defeated New York City FC at the Citi Field to secure their place in the play-offs of the MLS. The play-offs stage of the league, featuring a total of 18 teams, will start on October 22, while it will culminate with the MLS Cup on December 6, to crown the champion, and it is going to be interesting to see whether Inter Miami will win it or LA Galaxy defend their title successfully.
