In the Manchester derby played on Sunday, September 14, United were blown away by City at the Etihad Stadium, conceding three goals in a shocking defeat against their arch-rivals. Erling Haaland scored
a brace for Manchester City in the second half to consolidate their first half lead secured by Phil Foden, and the Premier League contest ended 3-0 in favour of them against Manchester United, propelling them to the top half of the table.
Following a miserable night for Manchester United, club legend Wayne Rooney didn’t mince his words for the current manager Ruben Amorim, stating that they have gone “worse” under him. While speaking on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show on the BBC, the 39-year-old began by saying, “I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be on the manager and the players.”
“But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we're seeing things that will get results in the near future. We're seeing none of that, and it is very difficult. There was an image towards the end of the game where I saw the Manchester United fans leaving. You could hear the fans singing Amorim's name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game,” remarked Wayne Rooney, losing his belief in the Portuguese manager after the derby debacle for Manchester United.
I think if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse: Rooney on Amorim
Ruben Amorim was appointed as the manager of Manchester United after Erik ten Hag was sacked from the job, and during his 10-month long tenure, he has managed to win only eight Premier League matches out of 31. Wayne Rooney addressed the situation, and said, “I think after the last year when Ten Hag got sacked and Ruben came in, we're hearing how they're going to play and it is going to change. I think if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse.”
After finishing in 15th place in the Premier League last season with just 42 points, their lowest position in nearly 40 years, Manchester United have only four points to their name from four matches at the start of the 2025-26 season.
