On this day in 2013, India registered a home series victory against Australia in a seven-match ODI series. The Australia side which toured India for one T20I and seven ODIs, saw the hosts level the ODI series in the sixth
match in Nagpur, courtesy an unbeaten 115 from Virat Kohli. But as the series moved to Bengaluru, it was speculated to be a showdown as the winner was set to take it all.
Winning the toss and electing to field first, George Bailey-led Australia invited India to bat. The Men in Blue, who were then led by MS Dhoni, added 383 runs at the loss of six wickets, courtesy a 158-ball 209 from Rohit Sharma and a 38-ball 62 from MS Dhoni. During Rohit’s stay in the middle for 158 deliveries, he smashed 16 sixes and 12 fours, at a strike rate of 132.27.
The Mumbai batter not only helped India register a convincing 57-run win, but also etched history with his 16 sixes in an innings. However, his record could not last long as England’s then limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan during his knock of 148 smashed 17 sixes in an innings against Afghanistan in the 2019 World Cup.
