Yuvraj Singh was instrumental in T20 cricket becoming popular in India with the central role he played in the team’s victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup and was a leading figure in the 2011 World Cup win
too. Known for his flamboyance and elegance the stylish left hander in a recent interview was asked, “Which player from the current Indian team reminds you of Yuvraj of 2007”. To which, Yuvraj Singh quickly responded with Abhishek Sharma.
Abhishek Sharma, who plays for Yuvraj’s former state side Punjab and for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, is one of the players that the former all-rounder said is similar to how he batted. A few years back Yuvraj had said “I think when I see Abhishek (Sharma), he reminds me a lot about myself. The pull shot, the backfoot shot he hits, I felt I was very much like him,” Yuvraj said on Sports18. Abhishek has impressed with consistent performances for SRH in the last few years and also at the International stage for India. He has scored 1029 runs at a strike rate of 189 and is currently ranked as the Number 1 T20I batter in the world.
In the recent Asia Cup 2025, Abhishek Sharma not only dominated the opposition but also etched his name in the record books by breaking the long-standing record for the fastest T20I half-century by an Indian against Pakistan. Abhishek reached his fifty in just 24 balls, surpassing Yuvraj’s previous record of 29 balls, set during the 2012 T20I in Ahmedabad. His aggressive innings left the Pakistan bowlers rattled, as the opposition attempted to unsettle the Indian batters with verbal exchanges.
As he currently prepares for the T20I series against South Africa and the upcoming WT20. Abhishek can go past his idol in one more record. The swashbuckling left-handed batter Abhishek Sharma has already hammered six half-centuries in T20I cricket. The explosive opener needs only three fifties to go past his idol, Yuvraj Singh, on the list of Indian batters with the most half-centuries in the format. It is no secret that Abhishek Sharma has trained a lot under the guidance of his idol and mentor Yuvraj Singh and fans all around the world get a sense of enjoyment watching this special player bat.
