In the main event of WWE SmackDown this week from the SAP Center in San Jose, California, Cody Rhodes retained the WWE Championship after getting disqualified due to hitting the title belt across the face
of the challenger Drew McIntyre. The impromptu WWE Championship match came about after the scheduled No. 1 contender’s match between Drew McIntyre and Jacob Fatu got pulled due to a savage backstage attack on the latter from an unidentified individual.
After Drew McIntyre hit the ring for the scheduled No.1 contender’s match, knowing all too well about Jacob Fatu’s fate backstage, he demanded the referee Ryan Tran to raise his hand as a winner of the contest due to a forfeit. But it led to WWE SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis making his way to the stage, making it perfectly clear that if McIntyre had anything to do with the attack on Fatu, then he would be facing severe consequences.
Drew McIntyre was clear in his stance that he had nothing to do with Jacob Fatu getting beat up backstage before wanting Aldis to give him the WWE Championship match immediately. Moments later, a furious Cody Rhodes made his way in suit and tie, screaming enough is enough before telling McIntyre that they should give San Jose something since the No. 1 contender’s match is now off before putting his championship on the line and started brawling at ringside.
Cody Rhodes took out Drew McIntyre and security personnel with a dive off the top turnbuckle
After the commercial break, the WWE Championship match became official with the referee Ryan Tran ringing the bell. While the commentators Vic Joseph and Corey Graves debated whether it’s really a title match, Drew McIntyre connected with a Future Shock DDT, forcing Cody Rhodes to kick out at two, and then, the champion nailed the challenger with Cross Rhodes before the latter fell to the floor in a vulnerable state.
The pent up rage in the eyes of Cody Rhodes turned for the worse as he hit Drew McIntyre with the title belt after they went over the timekeeper’s barricade, causing a disqualification and retaining the WWE Championship. They didn’t stop there as Rhodes cleared up the commentary table before getting in position to hit McIntyre once again with another Cross Rhodes, but he was saved by the security personnel before all of them were taken out by the WWE Championship with a dive off the top turnbuckle towards the floor.
