Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has sent a message of support to families caught up in the devastating floods in Nepal saying the wait for news of a loved one can be the hardest part of a tragedy.
Sachin Tendulkar posted on X on Thursday evening, hours after the floods caused widespread destruction in parts of Nepal. The disaster has left hundreds dead and many more missing with rescue teams continuing to search for those stranded and unaccounted for. The message came as concern grew over the number of people still missing, including foreign tourists and Indian nationals who were in the affected areas.

“There is perhaps no greater uncertainty than not knowing whether someone you love is safe,” Tendulkar wrote. He said his heart went out to families affected by the floods, particularly those still waiting for news, and also prayed for the rescue teams involved in the operation. The former India cricketer has often used his social media platforms to comment on events away from cricket and this time his message came as the tragedy in Nepal drew attention from across the cricketing world. Apart from Sachin, several other celebrities and cricketers like Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan took to social media to express their concern.
Nepal players observe minute’s silence in Australia
The response has also come from Nepal's cricket community. Nepal players who are currently in Australia for the Top End T20 Series observed a minute's silence before their match on Thursday as tributes were paid to those affected back home. Dipendra Singh Airee urged people living around the Trishuli River, particularly those close to the riverbanks, to remain alert and move to safer areas if necessary. Sandeep Lamichhane similarly asked people to avoid rivers, flooded roads, bridges and other dangerous areas and to follow official safety instructions.
Sachin Tendulkar was not the only former Indian cricketer to react to the disaster. Yuvraj Singh posted on Thursday that his thoughts were with those affected and, in particular, families still waiting for their loved ones. Suresh Raina also shared a message, saying his heart went out to families grieving, waiting, and praying and hoping that stranded people would be rescued. Shikhar Dhawan had posted a day earlier, saying he was saddened by the devastation and hoping tourists, including Indians reported missing, would return home safely. Mohammed Azharuddin also offered his condolences to families who had lost loved ones and those still waiting for news.
