India's Chanambam Rishikanta Singh won country's first silver medal at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in men's 60 kgs weightlifting. Earlier on Day 1 of the tournament, para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar
secured a bronze medal for India by successfully lifting 190 kg on his second attempt. He secured 130.9 under the format’s bodyweight coefficient formula. This was also India’s first official medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Riluwan Idris of Nigeria secured the gold medal, while England's Matthew Harding claimed silver.
On 26 July 2026, Rishikanta Singh won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in the Men's 60kg weight category. This is India's first official medal in an able-bodied event at the 2026 Games. Singh has also set a world record in the snatch category by successfully hoisting 121kg on his third attempt. He lifted 143kg on his opening attempt. He missed his final two attempts at higher weights, which cost him the gold medal. He finished with a stellar overall lift of 264kg to secure the second podium spot.
Malaysia’s Mohammad Aniq Kasdan lifted an overall of 273 kg and won the gold medal. Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya secured the third position by lifting 115 kg on the snatch and a powerful 145 kg in clean and jerk. Mboya narrowly edged out Sri Lanka's SDSS Wiriduwagle (who finished at 244kg) to comfortably claim the third podium spot for Kenya.
India eyes more medals through Lovlina Borgohain, Neeraj Chopra and rising athletics stars
Since the start of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, India has managed to get only two medals, a bronze by Jhandu Kumar in the parapowerlifter category and the newly awarded silver medal to the Manipur based weightlifter Rishikanta Singh. India will only feature in the women's wheelchair 3x3 basketball event. The medal rounds are expected to take place on July 28 and 29. Given this is India's first-ever qualification to a para team-sport, hopes of a medal are minimal.
Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has already won the first CWG medal of her career, after the draw gave her direct entry into the semifinals. Only the colour of her medal needs to be determined. Javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra will be looking forward to regaining his crown and winning the medal. In addition, India's recent record-breakers, the likes of Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Parul Chaudhary, Sarvesh Kushare, Dev Meena, Pooja Singh and more have raised hopes of a first CWG medal for themselves with recent performances.
