What is the story about?
Mohsin Naqvi, Chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), will not attend the Asian Games men's cricket final between India and Pakistan on Saturday in Japan's Nisshin City.
The BCCI and PCB have been at odds because of strained diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan. Problems grew further after the terror attack in Pahalgam last year, where innocent civilians were killed.
India launched retaliatory action on terror bases with Operation Sindoor, delivering a jaw-dropping response.
The ACC confirmed that Naqvi won't be at the Asian Games men's gold medal match between India and Pakistan because of prior commitments. The council affirmed the details on the social media platform 'X'.
"ACC President, Mr Mohsin Naqvi, will miss Finals Day at Asian Games 2026 due to prior commitments, but sends his very best wishes to all four teams ahead of the Gold and Bronze Medal Matches," the ACC's official post said.
Naqvi also wished all the participating teams the best ahead of the
gold and bronze medal matches and is hopeful to see some thrilling action.
"Wishing all the participants the very best ahead of gold and bronze medal matches at the Asian Games 2026. Commitments will keep me away from Nagoya. But I will be looking forward to some thrilling action," the PCB supremo was quoted as saying in the post.
Given that Naqvi will not be present at the continental showpiece, the Olympic Council of Asia, local organisers, and the IOA can avoid a potentially volatile situation.
Notably, the Indian men's and women's cricket teams refused to accept their respective Asia Cup trophies as a sign of protest. The BCCI has maintained their stance that its teams would not receive the trophies from him.
But Naqvi has also been adamant, saying that if India wants the Asia Cup trophies, they need to collect them from him.
The Indian cricket team will be in action against Pakistan in the Asian Games gold medal match today, with the Men in Blue winning the toss and opting to bat first at the Korogi Sports Park.
