Indian weightlifter Chanambam Rishikanta Singh helped India earn its maiden silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday. The 28-year-old clinched a podium finish in the men's 60kg weightlifting, adding to the country's medal count in the 2026 Games.
India's medal account opened after Jhandu Kumar won the bronze medal in the men's heavyweight para powerlifting event with a best lift of 190 kg. The para powerlifter's achievement reflected his journey of resilience and determination.
Rishikanta had to settle for the second spot on the podium in the men's 60kg weightlifting, while Malaysia's Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq won the gold medal. Kenya's Joshua Amunga Mboya clinched the bronze.
The Indian weightlifter began with a successful 116kg lift on his first attempt in the snatch category. He went on to complete successful lifts of 119kg and 121 kg.
The third successful lift was Rishikanth's personal and Commonwealth Games snatch record, and he also finished at the top spot at the end of the snatch category.

Rishikanta's medal chances, however, depended on the clean and jerk lifts as Aniq had also lifted a successful 121 kg snatch lift.
During the clean and jerk category, Rishikanta started with a successful 143kg lift on his first attempt but failed to lift 148kg on his second attempt. Aniq lifted 149kg, and the only chance for Rishikanta to win gold was to lift 151kg successfully.

But the Indian weightlifter failed to lift 151 kg and had to settle for a silver medal in the men's 60kg category after he lifted an overall total of 264kg. Aniq completed a total lift of 271kg to secure the gold.
