Here are the biggest talking points from matchday 16 of the World Cup 2026:
Cape Verde create history with knockout qualification
Cape Verde produced one of the greatest stories of the tournament in Houston as they became the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage. The debutants held Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw to complete an unbeaten group stage run.
The African country had already stunned many by drawing 0-0 with Spain in their first group match and fighting back for a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Their three points were enough to secure second place behind Spain in Group H and book a Round of 32 clash against reigning champions Argentina in Miami.

Senegal crush Iraq to stay alive in knockout race
Senegal delivered a ruthless performance to beat Iraq 5-0 in Toronto and keep their knockout hopes alive.
After a tight first half, Senegal exploded after the break with goals from Ismaila Sarr, Pape Gueye, and Iliman Ndiaye. Iraq, meanwhile, were reduced to 10 men early in the match following a VAR red card, which further contributed to their massive defeat.
3 - Ismaïla Sarr, Pape Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye all scored and assisted for Senegal vs Iraq.
It is the first time a team had three players do so in a FIFA World Cup match since Germany in their 7-1 win over Brazil in 2014 (Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira, Thomas Müller).
