What is the story about?
Germany began their quest for a record-equalling fifth FIFA World Cup title with a 7-1 demolition of debutants Curacao in Houston on Sunday. Kai Havertz fired a brace, scoring once in either half while Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav scored a goal each during Germany's goal-fest at the Houston Stadium.
For Curacao, the smallest nation to ever qualify for the FIFA World Cup, Livano Comenencia made history in the 21st minute when he fired the ball past veteran German keeper Manuel Neuer, scoring his team's first goal ever at football's showpiece tournament.
With their thumping 7-1 victory, the four-time world champions have put themselves in the perfect position to advance to the knockouts as group winners after suffering first-round exits in the last two editions of the tournament.
The dominant scoreline has also helped them break a couple of records.
'Die Mannschaft' have now surpassed five-time world champions Brazil in terms of goals scored at the World Cup. Germany have now scored 239 goals at the tournament, one more than what Brazil have managed till date.
Their 7-1 victory over Curacao also marked the fourth instance of Germany scoring seven or more goals in a World Cup match, the most by any team. They were previously tied at the top spot with Hungary, who have achieved the feat three times till date.
The scoreline also reminded many a football fan of Germany's historic 7-1 demolition of Brazil in Belo Horizonte, with Joachim Loew's men having gone on to win the tournament with a victory over Argentina in the final.
Here are some of the reactions to the Group E clash between Germany and Curacao:

Is there a more traumatic scoreline in football than 7-1?
Germany 7-1.
Brazil wasn't even playing... and somehow still got mentioned. 😂🇧🇷

This Germany Curacao game shows why the expanded World Cup is so embarrassing. Can you imagine a serious team losing 7-1 to Germany before all these new teams were let in?

Germans love a 7-1 World Cup scoreline. Ok, it’s not Brazil 2014 in Belo Horizonte. It’s Curacao, 82 in the world, ruthlessly put to the sword, yes a historic goal, and wonderful support, but hardly a great advertisement for 48-team tournament. So perspective needed … but…
