Union Home Minister Amit Shah has articulated a significant pledge from the Bharatiya Janata Party regarding West Bengal: if the party secures victory
in the upcoming elections, the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be a top priority, slated for completion within a six-month timeframe. This commitment signifies a major policy direction intended to harmonize personal laws across the state. Beyond this, Shah emphasized that the BJP's manifesto is crafted to address the aspirations of Bengal's populace, aiming to lift various sections of society out of despair and provide a clear roadmap for progress, aligning with Prime Minister Modi's vision for a developed India. The party aims to galvanize public support by presenting itself as a harbinger of substantial change and a solution to the perceived disillusionment and fear prevalent among the state's citizens.
National Security Focus
A cornerstone of the BJP's electoral agenda for West Bengal is a stringent focus on national security, particularly concerning the state's border with Bangladesh. The party has vowed to implement robust measures aimed at sealing this border effectively, thereby bolstering the nation's overall security apparatus. This includes a firm commitment to identifying, detecting, and deporting illegal immigrants residing in Bengal. Shah highlighted that the current administration has failed to meet the people's expectations, leading to widespread disillusionment. The BJP positions itself as the principal opposition party ready to bring about transformative governance, promising to address issues of corruption and the breakdown of law and order through the introduction of three 'White Papers' detailing past transgressions and outlining a plan for restoration.
Manifesto's 15 Promises
The BJP's comprehensive manifesto for West Bengal outlines a total of 15 key promises designed to foster development and improve the lives of its citizens. These pledges span critical areas such as employment, women's safety, and agricultural support. The party commits to creating 1 crore new job and self-employment opportunities over the next five years, coupled with financial aid of Rs 3,000 per month for unemployed youth until they secure employment. For women, initiatives include the formation of a 'Durga Suraksha Squad' for enhanced safety, a 33% reservation in state government jobs, and monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,000 to promote self-reliance. Farmers are assured of special government assistance for paddy, potato, and mango cultivation, alongside fair pricing mechanisms for their produce. The manifesto also addresses the fisheries sector by enrolling fishermen under the 'Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana' and aims to establish West Bengal as a leading industrial and fish-exporting state.
Economic & Cultural Boost
Further elaborating on its vision for West Bengal, the BJP's manifesto includes significant provisions for economic revitalization and cultural preservation. The party promises to tackle the 'syndicate Raj' and 'cut money' culture, aiming for complete elimination. Government employees and pensioners can expect parity with central rates for Dearness Allowance and the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission. In terms of industrial growth, the BJP intends to transform West Bengal into a premier industrial hub. Specific attention is given to traditional industries like tea gardens, with plans for global branding of Darjeeling tea and modernization of the jute industry. The manifesto also advocates for language inclusion, proposing to add Kudmali and Rajbanshi languages to the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. Furthermore, it outlines plans for health and education advancements, including the implementation of Ayushman Bharat, free health screenings for women, and the establishment of new AIIMS, IIT, and IIM campuses in North Bengal.
