Deadly Fruit Consumption
In a grim turn of events, four members of the Dokadia family—Abdullah (40), his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13)—succumbed
to a mysterious ailment on the night of April 25th. The family had shared a meal with five other relatives, and shortly after consuming watermelon around 1:30 AM, the four individuals fell critically ill, passing away within the subsequent 12 hours. This devastating loss has prompted a deep dive into the circumstances surrounding their final meal, with initial investigations focusing on the possibility of a shared source of contamination.
Rat Poison Inquiry Intensifies
Mumbai Police have redoubled their efforts to determine the exact cause of death, particularly focusing on the presence of zinc phosphide, a common ingredient in rat poison, as the primary suspect. Officers conducted a second search of the Dokadia family's residence in the Pydhonie area, hoping to uncover any lingering evidence or remnants of the poison. Despite the extensive search, the only substance found that bore resemblance to pest control was a herbal concoction in a bottle, which officers confirmed did not contain zinc phosphide. This discovery has led investigators to explore alternative theories, including accidental contamination during the supply chain or deliberate poisoning within the household itself.
Household Pest Problems
It has been revealed that the Dokadia family, along with several other residents in their building, had been experiencing issues with rats. Relatives and the police officer involved in the probe confirmed that the family, like others, resorted to various methods to combat the persistent pests, including rat repellents and glue traps. This context provides a plausible, albeit tragic, avenue for how rat poison might have inadvertently found its way into the family's food supply. Investigators are now broadening their scope by planning to record statements from Abdullah Dokadia's four brothers and two sisters, who live in close proximity, to gather more insights into the family's living conditions and any potential contributing factors.
Unrelated Incident Clarified
Authorities have addressed a video circulating on social media depicting a fruit vendor applying rat poison near a food stall, clarifying that this incident is unrelated to the Dokadia family tragedy. The footage, which has caused some public concern, actually pertains to an event that occurred in February in Malad. An FIR was registered at the Malad police station regarding that specific incident. Senior police inspector Dushyant Chavan from Malad confirmed that their investigation into the video involved questioning vendors who admitted to using rat poison around their stall at night to deter rats. However, it was explicitly stated that the poison was not applied to the fruits themselves, and this separate occurrence has no bearing on the current investigation into the family's deaths.
