Agarkar's October 2025 press conference and what followed
The phrase traces back to a press conference held on October 4, 2025, at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, while announcing India's 15-member squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia, publicly stated that both Virat Kohliand Rohit Sharma were 'non-committal' about their participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The announcement also confirmed Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit.
That captaincy decision was taken collectively by Agarkar alongside India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. At the same time, Agarkar noted that a message had been sent to both Rohit and Kohli encouraging them to play domestic cricket when available, with the Vijay Hazare Trophy cited as a relevant upcoming tournament.
Rohit's previous response and the t-shirt moment
Rohit had previously addressed the 'non-committal' tag at a DP World event, telling fans: 'you got to commit to watch,' a line that many observers read as a pointed, light-hearted response to Agarkar's characterisation. The t-shirt appearance has since been interpreted as a continuation of that same tone, though a secondary reading suggests the phrase also serves as a promotional device for the Sony LIV show to generate social media conversation ahead of its launch.
By October 2025, both Rohit and Kohli had already retired from Test cricket and T20 internationals, leaving ODIs as their only remaining format for India. Rohit had retired from T20Is after India lifted the T20 World Cup in 2024, and both players stepped away from Tests following the 2024-25 tour of Australia. In the ICC Champions Trophy, Rohit scored 180 runs in the tournament, including a 76 in the final against New Zealand in Dubai, a match India won to end a 10-year ICC trophy drought.
Agarkar had also clarified at the NDTV World Summit 2025 that Rohit and Kohli would not be placed 'on trial' during the Australia ODI series.
