England should ask India to field first to tire Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out, says Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes making Vaibhav Sooryavanshifield for an entire innings before he bats could be England's best tactic in the five-match T20I series against India, starting Wednesday, July 1. With no impact substitutes in international cricket, Vaughan argues the fielding workload could take the edge off the 15-year-old opener.

Sooryavanshi has been the biggest talking point heading into this tour. The Bihar-born left-hander won the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 with 776 runs

at a strike rate of 237.30, hitting a record 72 sixes across the season. As an opener, he bats at the very top of India's order. He was left out of India's playing XI for the first T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday, June 26, a match the visitors lost by 34 runs.

Since Sooryavanshi opens the batting, he would have to field through India's entire bowling innings if England choose to bat first. Vaughan sees this as the edge England can exploit.

"The one thing he's going to have to cope with is his fielding. There's no impact sub where he can sit on the bench. If I was England, I'd ask India to field first because then by the time Suryavanshi comes to bat, he might be tired," Vaughan said on Ajinkya Rahane's YouTube channel.

Vaughan's admiration for the teenager, though, has never been in doubt. Beyond the tactical suggestion, the former England captain has credited Sooryavanshi with being the defining force in reshaping T20 batting standards globally.

"There's only one name that is being talked about here and that is the 15-year-old kid. I think T20 cricket, particularly through Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has taken the game to 230 being a par score. I think that is the norm now, teams are looking to get 230-plus. Opening batters are going harder than ever. It is almost as if a 15-year-old has sent a message to the rest of the world that T20 cricket can go to another level," Vaughan said.

India face Ireland in the second and final T20I in Belfast on Sunday, June 28, before travelling to England for the five-match T20I series starting at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, on Wednesday, July 1. Sooryavanshi, who was left out of the playing XI in Belfast, is yet to make his senior international debut and remains in the squad for the England leg.
