Top three player battles to watch in NZ vs IND 2nd ODI

Gurnoor Brar versus Daryl Mitchell

Gurnoor Brar, the right-arm seamer, took 3 wickets in the first ODI but has shown a hot-and-cold pattern since his international debut earlier in 2026. Daryl Mitchell was run-out in the opening match after scoring 28 runs off 41 deliveries, which included 3 fours and 1 six. The Kiwi batter remains vulnerable to disciplined bowling as he likes to get on with the game. Mitchell's fantastic record in ODIs against India adds intrigue to this contest, as Brar will aim to maintain pressure and prevent the Kiwis from building a substantial innings. The seamer's consistency will be tested against a batter who has proven his ability to counter Indian bowling attacks.

Shubman Gill versus Kyle Jamieson

Shubman Gill, India's captain, scored 37 off 56 balls in the first ODI, displaying a watchful approach. His caution reflected the demands of his first game on tour and limited New Zealand experience. Kyle Jamieson will present a fresh challenge for Gill, who must balance aggression with the need to build partnerships and stabilise India's innings in Wellington's conditions. Jamieson's height and bounce could trouble Gill if the Indian captain attempts to accelerate his scoring rate without getting his eye in.

Virat Kohli versus Jacob Duffy

Virat Kohli's aggressive intent in the first ODI produced 74 runs off 51 deliveries, featuring 13 fours and 1 six, showcasing his red-hot form this year. Jacob Duffy dismissed Kohli in that match, with Tim Seifert taking the catch behind the stumps. The former India captain will look to build on his momentum, while Duffy will seek to replicate his success and restrict India's scoring in the powerplay and middle overs. Duffy's ability to extract movement in Wellington's conditions could prove crucial in containing Kohli's aggressive approach.
