Virat Kohliset a new personal record for the most sixes in a single ODI innings when he struck 9 maximums against West Indies in the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, on September 27, 2026. The knock surpassed his previous best of 8 sixes, which he had hit against Sri Lanka at the same venue in 2023.
Kohli finished unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls, hitting 10 fours and 9 sixes at a strike rate of 157.95. It was his 55th ODI century. During the innings, he also became
only the second batter in ODI history to reach 15,000 runs, after Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli reached the milestone in 303 innings, compared to Tendulkar's 377 innings, underlining the remarkable pace at which he has accumulated runs across his career.
The innings carried an additional statistical distinction: it was the first time in Kohli's international career that he reached both his fifty and his hundred with sixes in the same ODI innings. West Indies had posted 295/7 batting first, and India chased down the target in 41.4 overs, winning the first ODI by 8 wickets. Shubman Gill contributed 110 off 108 balls in the same innings, giving India two centurions in a single chase.
What were Kohli's previous best six-hitting performances in ODIs?
Before September 27, 2026, Kohli's highest six count in a single ODI innings was 8, scored against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram in 2023. He had also hit 7 sixes on two separate occasions: against Australia in Jaipur in 2013, and against South Africa in Ranchi in 2025. The record against West Indies now stands as the highest of his ODI career.

How did Kohli's partnerships shape India's chase?
Kohli built a 151-run second-wicket partnership with Shubman Gill off 132 balls, which formed the backbone of India's successful chase of 296. Gill's contribution of 110 off 108 balls meant India had two centurions in the same innings, a rare feat in an ODI chase of this nature.
After Gill's dismissal, Kohli added a 75-run third-wicket stand with Ruturaj Gaikwad off just 46 balls, accelerating the chase further and leaving West Indies with no route back into the contest. India completed the target in 41.4 overs, winning by 8 wickets in a dominant all-round team performance at the Greenfield International Stadium.
