Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma brought humour and sharp insight to a Gurugram event with a witty remark aimed at England’s disappointing Ashes 2025-26 campaign against Australia. The Mumbai batter
highlighted the unforgiving nature of Test cricket in Australia, referencing England’s 3-0 deficit following heavy defeats in Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide.
Australia sealed the series with an 82-run victory in the third Test, equalling the shortest Ashes series decision in nearly a century and once again underlining their dominance at home. Drawing a comparison with India’s historic 2021 triumph at the Gabba, Rohit reflected on how difficult it is for touring sides to succeed Down Under, especially given Australia’s fortress-like reputation.
Recalling India’s injury-hit squad and the presence of debutants during that tour, Rohit invoked Rishabh Pant’s memorable match-winning innings and Tim Paine’s pre-match comments, using the moment to underline just how extraordinary India’s achievement was.
“Australia mein khelna sabse difficult hai, aap England ko puch hi sakte ho. Playing in Australia is the toughest; just ask England,” said Rohit in Master’s Union convocation.
Rohit’s remark quickly resonated across cricketing circles, fuelling fan banter as England look to salvage pride in the final two Ashes Tests and avoid a 5-0 whitewash, their fourth such outcome in Ashes history. The light-hearted troll followed Rohit’s own strong run in Australia, where he struck a commanding ODI century in October, further reinforcing his reputation as one of cricket’s most candid and outspoken voices.
Away from the banter, Rohit has been named in Mumbai’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26 opener. The tournament began in December 2024 at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium, with all-rounder Shardul Thakur captaining the side. Mumbai are scheduled to face Sikkim on December 24, followed by a clash against Uttarakhand on December 26.
Rohit has confirmed his availability for the opening fixtures before rejoining the Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand in January. His last full Vijay Hazare campaign came in the 2018-19 season, where he played a pivotal role, including a match-winning unbeaten knock against Bihar in the quarter-finals that helped Mumbai clinch the title.
