Finn Allen was caught by Digvesh Singh Rathi in Match 15 of IPL 2026 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, off a Prince Yadav delivery in the second over of the game. Digvesh was stationed at the deep third man and completed a sharp catch, inches away from the boundary ropes.
The catch was adjudged as clean by the umpires, and as a result, Allen had to make the long walk back after scoring nine off eight. However, the real drama started after there was a television
replay of the dismissal, which indicated that there might be a possibility that Digvesh's left foot might have touched one of the boundary cushions, as the matter looked very close upon seeing it from multiple angles and in slow motion.
It is worth mentioning that nowadays, the level of umpiring in the IPL has scaled very high with the usage of technology. Quick boundary checks and referrals by the third umpire just a few seconds after the actual incident have allowed for making faster decisions, saving a lot of time to ensure that the match ends within the allotted time and there is the least time consumed for television replays.
Nonetheless, the damage was done, as Allen's dismissal resulted in the fall of the first wicket for KKR pretty early on in the innings.
A set of fans, however, continued debating the fairness of the catch on social media. Many fans took to their social media handles on 'X' (formerly known as Twitter) to opine their views, questioning if there was any need to make a hasteful decision by KN Ananthapadmanabhan, the third umpire for the ongoing match.

@IPL what is the use of spending lots on the technology when you can't use it properly. Rathi took a catch on the boundary and touched the rope while taking the catch and the umpire didn't bother to check technology. It's an IPL NOT psl so use technology #iplindia2026 #playfair

Umpire took so much time for that Shami catch of Ajinkya Rahane but took no time in the decision of Finn Allen which clearly looked six.

Itās good we can spend 15 minutes checking a wide thatās 3 feet over the batsmanās head but when deciding whether or not the biggest wicket in the game is out they just look at stuff like this for 5 seconds and send him on his way pic.twitter.com/JeI9aWjYq7
