The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini-auction concluded on Tuesday, December 16, with franchises spending heavily to strengthen their squads. While several established stars attracted massive bids,
the auction also proved to be a breakthrough moment for a few lesser-known names. Notably, some overseas players earned their maiden IPL contracts, marking a significant milestone in their careers.
Here are 3 overseas players who earned first IPL contract
Cooper Connolly
Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly was snapped up by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for INR 3 crore. The 22-year-old is a promising talent who offers versatility with both bat and ball. A left-handed batter, Connolly can provide stability in the middle order and is also capable of finishing innings when required. Additionally, his left-arm spin makes him a valuable option in Indian conditions, where spin often plays a key role.
Connolly has been a consistent performer for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL), scoring 636 runs and picking up 12 wickets so far. He has also featured in Major League Cricket (MLC) for the San Francisco Unicorns, gaining experience in high-pressure franchise cricket. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer and the guidance of head coach Ricky Ponting Connolly will be eager to make a strong impression in his maiden IPL season.
Jacob Duffy
New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy secured his first IPL contract after being bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for INR 2 crore. Duffy has been steadily rising in the international T20 circuit, boasting an impressive bowling average of 17 and an economy rate of around seven. The right-arm pacer is known for his discipline and ability to hit hard lengths consistently.
Although he has limited experience in global franchise leagues, Duffy has played in competitions such as The Hundred and the Blast. Joining the IPL 2025 champions RCB, he is expected to serve as a reliable backup for senior pacer Josh Hazlewood and could play a crucial role if conditions suit pace and bounce.
Jack Edwards
Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards also earned his maiden IPL contract after being signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 3 crore following a competitive bidding war with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Edwards represents the Sydney Sixers in the BBL, where he has showcased his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. He has also gained exposure in Major League Cricket, playing for Washington Freedom.
At SRH, Edwards will have the opportunity to learn from fellow Australians Pat Cummins and Travis Head. Their presence, along with the franchise’s strong support system, could help Edwards develop further and establish himself as a valuable asset in the IPL over time.
