Test matches are finishing significantly faster than they did in the 1990s. In the 1990s, approximately 7 per cent of Test matches finished in three days or less, but that figure has now risen to 20 per cent. The shift is particularly striking when examining two-day Test finishes, in the last decade, there have been nine occasions where Test matches have finished in two days, whereas there was not a single two-day Test between 1946 and 2000.
Michael Atherton, the former England captain, made these
observations during the rain-delayed start to Day 3 of the England vs Pakistan 2nd Test at Lord's on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Atherton outlined several factors contributing to the acceleration of Test cricket, each of which he examined in detail during his analysis.
"Myself and Nass (Nasser Hussain) played in the 1990s, and the number of games that finished in three days or less was around about 7 per cent, and that is now at 20 per cent, so that is a big difference. In the last decade, there have been nine occasions where test matches have finished in two days, and there wasn't a single occasion of a two-day test between 1946 and 2000. So I think the general starting point is that test matches are going quicker. Now, if you ask why, I mean, that's the element of debate, and then we can discuss whether it's a good or a bad thing or what might change. But if I give off the top of my head four or five things, then we can go into each one," said Atherton on Sky Sports.
The influence of T20 cricket on Test batting represents one of the primary drivers of faster match conclusions. Players accustomed to aggressive shot-making in the shorter format carry that mindset into Test cricket, where the risk-reward calculation differs fundamentally. Atherton identified this shift as a key factor in accelerating dismissals and match pace.
"Batting is higher risk now because of T20, and if you take more risk, you're going to have a chance of getting out more, so that's speeding up. There is a good crop of fast bowlers around right now. DRS has had an impact, I think. Umpires, first of all, DRS, you know, will show when you're out, and then umpires are more likely to give LBWs," Atherton said.
The quality of fast bowling in international cricket has also contributed to quicker Test finishes. A strong generation of pace bowlers currently competing at the highest level has tilted the balance further towards the bowling side, making it harder for batting lineups to build substantial innings and extend matches. This bowling strength, combined with the aggressive batting approach influenced by T20, has created conditions favourable to faster match conclusions.
The Decision Review System has altered the dynamics of umpiring in Test cricket. The technology has made it easier to identify incorrect decisions, particularly regarding leg-before-wicket dismissals. Umpires, knowing that their decisions can be reviewed and overturned, have become more willing to give LBW decisions that might previously have been turned down.
"I think pitches have become more advantageous since the advent of the World Test Championship. Teams are generally looking to get home advantage more, so whether it's turning pitches in India or seeming pitches in England, and generally the pitches have become more bowling-friendly since the advent of the World Test Championship. So there's four or five reasons off the top of my head," Atherton concluded.
