New Zealand posted 225/4 in the first T20I against India at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on October 22, 2026. The total is their highest T20I score on home soil and their joint-highest T20I total against India across all venues.
Glenn Phillips was the standout contributor with the bat, scoring 82 not out off 40 balls. His unbeaten knock was the highest individual score in the innings and played a central role in carrying New Zealand past 200 and on to 225. Phillips remained at the crease until the final
delivery, with New Zealand finishing the innings with six wickets still in hand.
The 225/4 equals the 225 New Zealand made against India in the fifth T20I at Thiruvananthapuram on February 1, 2026, a match that came in a series India won 4-1. That earlier total was recorded as 225/10, meaning New Zealand had used all their wickets to reach the same figure. The Christchurch innings was therefore a more controlled batting effort by comparison.
How does 225/4 compare to New Zealand's best T20I scores against India?
New Zealand's T20I record against India now features two totals of 225 at the top, both posted in 2026. The Thiruvananthapuram score of 225/10 on February 1, 2026 had been the previous benchmark against this opponent. The Christchurch total of 225/4 on October 22, 2026 matches that figure and is classified as joint-highest against India.
New Zealand's third-highest T20I total against India stands at 219/6, made at Wellington in 2019. The gap between that score and the two 225-run totals from 2026 illustrates how significantly New Zealand have raised their scoring ceiling against India in the format over the past year.
The Christchurch total is also their highest T20I score on home soil across all opponents. The fact that they achieved this with six wickets remaining adds further weight to the performance, suggesting New Zealand had the capacity to push even higher had the innings demanded it. This is the second highest T20I total at the venue, following England's mammoth 236 for 4 in 2025.
What did Glenn Phillips contribute to New Zealand's innings at Hagley Oval?
Glenn Phillips scored 82 not out off 40 balls in New Zealand's innings at Hagley Oval on October 22, 2026. His knock was the highest individual score in the innings and was central to New Zealand accelerating past 200 in the closing overs. Opener Finn Allen also contributed with 45 off 24 balls, while Bevon Jacobs scored 31 off 16 balls.
Phillips stayed unbeaten through the final stages, ensuring New Zealand did not lose a wicket in the latter part of the innings. His strike rate across the 40 balls he faced allowed the team to push the total well beyond what had seemed likely at the midpoint of the innings, and his presence at the crease gave the lower order a platform to attack freely.
The performance reinforces Phillips's standing as one of New Zealand's most productive T20I batters. His contribution on October 22, 2026 came in a match that now holds historical significance as New Zealand's highest home T20I total and their joint-highest against India in the format.
