Michael Neser has been ruled out of Australia's Bangladesh Test series after suffering a right calf strain during a training session in Brisbane. The 36-year-old is now focused on recovering in time for the Test tour of South Africa, which opens on October 9 in Durban.
The injury was confirmed on August 5, ruling him out of the Bangladesh series that began August 13 in Darwin. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon all returned for the Bangladesh series, meaning Neser would not have been in contention
for those matches regardless of his fitness. The injury therefore has no bearing on Australia's Bangladesh campaign but does introduce uncertainty around his place in the South Africa touring party. Neser confirmed that his recovery has been 'ahead of schedule and that he is already bowling off a short run-up and expects to return to a full run-up within weeks, giving him a realistic window to press for selection before the first Test.
"I felt great, I felt great – and then it just went on me. "I had another scan and results came back very good, so I'm progressing quite nicely. South Africa is still on the cards and still what I'm aiming for. Obviously, it hasn't been picked yet, but if all goes well with rehab and everything, I'll be fit and ready for that," Neser said, as quoted by cricket.com.au

The three-Test South Africa series runs across October 9-13 in Durban, October 18-22 in Gqeberha and October 27-31 in Cape Town. With his recovery described as ahead of schedule, Neser has roughly five weeks from the latest update to demonstrate full fitness before the opening Test. Whether he will be named in the touring party remains unconfirmed. Selectors are yet to announce the squad, and his inclusion depends on the progress he makes over the coming weeks.
Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc are also competing for pace spots on the tour, so Neser will need to prove his readiness to selectors before the squad is finalised. His recent record strengthens his case considerably. Neser claimed 15 wickets at an average of 19.93 across three Ashes Tests against England in January 2026, stepping up after several of Australia's frontline bowlers were unavailable. That performance established him as a genuine option when fit.

Neser was born in Pretoria and relocated to Queensland at the age of 10. "I guess it's a mixture of emotions. I'm a bit torn. Obviously, I was born there, grew up playing cricket there – and my dream was actually to play for South Africa when I was 10. Moved to Australia, things all changed, and now my dream is to play for Australia. So going over there will be like a little kid dream come true," Neser said.
Fellow South African-born Queenslander Marnus Labuschagne is under pressure to retain his Test place after a lean run of form that continued against Bangladesh. Labuschagne has never played Test cricket in South Africa, having made his debut in the UAE in 2018. Neser backed his teammate due to his competitive edge.
"I know Marnus, the person he is – it's not the first time he's been under the pump. I've seen it before – and he rises above it. He's so competitive, and I suppose this one thing that's made him such a great player is those attributes," he added.
