Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had a disappointing campaign in the IPL 2025, finishing seventh in the points table with only six wins in fourteen matches. Despite being part of the league for four seasons,
the Lucknow-based franchise has yet to lift the coveted IPL trophy. The team made headlines by acquiring Rishabh Pant for a record price at the 2025 mega auction, but his performances, while highlighted by a solitary century, were inconsistent overall.
With the IPL 2026 auction around the corner, LSG management will look to strengthen their squad, addressing key gaps and releasing players who failed to make a significant impact. Here are five players LSG could consider releasing ahead of the next season.
5 players LSG might release ahead of IPL 2026 auction
Mayank Yadav
The right-arm pacer Mayank Yadav was retained by LSG for a whopping INR 11 crore before the 2025 mega auction. However, his IPL season was plagued by injuries, restricting him to just two matches where he claimed only two wickets. Considering his high price tag and recurring fitness issues, Mayank could prove to be a liability. LSG might prefer freeing up funds to invest in a more consistent and injury-free pacer ahead of IPL 2026.
David Miller
The experienced left-handed batter David Miller struggled to make an impact in IPL 2025. Across 11 matches, he managed only 153 runs, often batting down the order with limited opportunities to influence games. His experience alone may not justify his retention, especially when LSG already has strong overseas options like Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, and Mitchell Marsh. Releasing Miller could allow LSG to explore a more explosive overseas batter or a game-changing all-rounder.
Abdul Samad
Abdul Samad was another underwhelming performer for LSG. In nine innings, he scored 164 runs at a strike rate of 176.34. While his strike rate indicates his potential for quick scoring, he failed to play any match-defining innings consistently. LSG could consider dropping him to make room for a more reliable domestic all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball, ensuring a more balanced squad.
Shahbaz Ahmed
The left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed was largely ineffective in IPL 2025. Featuring in only three matches, he failed to make an impact with either bat or ball. His limited contributions could lead LSG to explore emerging talents who can offer both bowling and batting options. Investing in a young all-rounder could strengthen the team’s depth and provide fresh energy to the squad.
Shamar Joseph
West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph, added via the RTM card, played just one match in IPL 2025 before being sidelined due to injuries. His fitness concerns and inability to adapt effectively to Indian conditions make his retention questionable. LSG could consider releasing Joseph to make room for an overseas pacer who can consistently perform in Indian conditions and strengthen the bowling unit.
