WATCH: Rohit Sharma's diving throw runs Daryl Mitchell out in 1st ODI at Eden Park

A moment of sharp fielding from Rohit Sharma brought the first ODI between New Zealand and India to a sudden halt in the 22nd over at Eden Park, Auckland, on November 4 2026. The 39-year-old launched a diving throw from the ring that found KL Rahul at the stumps, and Rahul removed the bails before Daryl Mitchell could regain his crease.

Mitchell had faced 41 balls and scored 28 runs when the moment arrived. He hesitated while attempting a single, and that brief indecision proved costly as Rohit's

throw arrived with enough precision for Rahul to complete the dismissal cleanly. The departure removed a settled batter from the New Zealand innings at a point when the hosts were building their total.

The sequence began when Mitchell pushed the ball into the covers and set off for a run. Rohit, fielding in the ring, moved quickly to his left and threw himself into a full-length dive to gather and release the ball in one motion. The throw travelled flat and direct to Rahul behind the stumps, who collected it cleanly and broke the wicket without any fumble. Mitchell, who had not fully committed to the run, was well short of his crease when the bails came off.

How did the run-out unfold in the 22nd over?

The dismissal drew an immediate reaction from the Indian fielders. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli rushed over to embrace Rohit after the effort, reflecting the significance the team placed on the moment. Speaking through their celebrations, the players made clear how much the breakthrough was valued at that stage of the New Zealand innings.

Mitchell's departure for 28 off 41 balls was the direct result of that combination of anticipation, physical effort and accuracy. For India, the run-out at Eden Park demonstrated that Rohit continues to contribute meaningfully in the field, not merely with bat or in leadership, but through moments that can shift the course of an innings with the 2027 World Cup being less than a year away.
