Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa feels THAT there is no better position than No. 3 for Suryakumar Yadavgiven the playing style and team combination of the Indian T20I team. Suryakumar is currently
leading the T20I side in Australia. Uthappa felt Suryakumar should not compromise his batting position due to the added weight of captaincy on his shoulders.
"It's like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place because it's a decision where you need to see your performances and manage your captaincy as well. It's a very difficult decision to make. However, I feel he should come in one position. In my opinion, there is no better position than No. 3 for Suryakumar in T20 cricket," stated Uthappa in a video on his YouTube channel.
The erstwhile wicketkeeper-batter mentioned that Suryakumar could switch between No. 3 and No. 4 on the basis of which of the top-order batters have gotten dismissed. He also admitted that Suryakumar should not bat at any position lower than two down.
"If the top three get set, you can bring flexibility after that. You can bring left-right combinations. In the Asia Cup, they probably decided that Tilak Varma would come at No.3 if a left-hander got out and Surya would come if a right-hander got out. That's still alright, but Suryakumar Yadav shouldn't come below No. 4. A top-order batter has to make a lot of adjustments if he has to bat below No. 4," he added.
Speaking of Suryakumar's T20I record at No. 3 and No. 4, the 35-year-old batter has registered 820 runs (29 matches) and 1614 runs (47 matches) at a strike rate of 159.22 and 167.25, respectively.
Speaking of the most recent fixture which Suryakumar played, he remained unbeaten on 39 off 24 against Australia in the first T20I of the five-match series in Canberra. The match ended in a 'no-result' after rain interrupted play after 9.4 overs of India's innings.
