Former South Africa head coach Mark Boucher believes Virat Kohli still has enough cricket left in him to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe next year. He asserted that age will not be a limiting factor for the Indian batting stalwart.
The Indian legend retired from T20Is following the T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, and from Tests in the last year, though the Delhi cricketer continues to play ODI cricket.
Speaking about Kohli’s longevity
and continued relevance in international cricket, Boucher expressed strong confidence in the former India captain’s ability to remain part of the national setup for the next global 50-over event. Kohli, who has been a central figure in India’s ODI plans for over a decade, continues to be a vital cog in the middle order.
Former South African wicketkeeper-batter highlighted that modern fitness standards, professionalism, and Kohli’s personal commitment to conditioning have significantly extended his career window. He noted that players who maintain their fitness levels and strong mental discipline are now able to perform at the highest level well into their late thirties.
"Virat is going to be there. There's no doubt in my mind. I mean, he's given up a couple of the formats at the moment. There's nothing about his fitness at all. It's just about whether he actually wants to play. And I think for me, I'm sure that his mind is set on coming here and playing in another World Cup. And India needs him as well. I mean, we've seen in India that Test cricket, where Rohit and Virat are not there, it does leave a hole. And so I think the World Cup in South Africa would be a better tournament if Virat Kohli is involved. And obviously, for India, it would be fantastic if he stands there as well," Boucher said.
Kohli will be 38 by the time the tournament is played, but his recent performances across formats have reinforced the belief that he remains far from decline. His adaptability, understanding of match situations, and ability to anchor innings make him a valuable asset in the ODI format.
Following the two consecutive ducks in October 2025 back in Australia, Kohli has scored two centuries and three half-centuries in his last five ODIs. He also won the Player of the Series award against South Africa in December last year. Recently, against New Zealand in the first ODI, he became the second-highest run getter of all time across formats in cricket.
Kohli would take on the ground again against New Zealand on 14th January in Rajkot.
