Standby skipper KL Rahul spoke on Ruturaj Gaikwad and the talent he possesses ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. Since making his ODI debut in 2022, Gaikwad has only played six matches for India as compared to 23 T20Is so far.
Rahul pointed out that Gaikwad has plenty of technical prowess. He also explained the reason behind behind players like Gaikwad not getting chances at the international level despite possessing the skills.
“Rutu is obviously a top-class player.
We’ve all seen that whatever limited opportunities he has received, he has utilised them well and shown what he can do. Unfortunately, in ODIs, the top five or six is quite settled and performing well, so you feel bad for players who don’t get enough chances. But at the same time, you’re happy that the playing group is doing well,” stated Rahul, as quoted by India Today.
The wicketkeeper-batter reinforced Gaikwad will be given opportunities to prove his potential. Rahul reiterated that skill has never been an issue while looking at Gaikwad as a top-order batter.
“It’s unfortunate for those missing out, but with a few injuries, he now has an opportunity. He will get his chance at some stage. We’re looking forward to giving him that opportunity and letting him show what he can do. There’s never been a question about his skill — it’s only about the right opportunity and timing. Hopefully, this series gives him that chance,” he added.
Gaikwad was the leading run-getter for India A in their three-match 50-over series against South Africa with 210 runs in three matches. He looked to be in sublime nick and that run of form lef to his selection in the ODI unit for the series against the Proteas.
With Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal also present in the squad, it remains to be seen if Gaikwad gets a chance to open the batting or not.
