In a short turnaround time after their five-match T20I series against the West Indies, India (IND) have now reached down south to face New Zealand (NZ)
in a multi-format tour. The first T20I of the tour will be played on Thursday, October 22, at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, marking a promising start to the highly anticipated assignment.
New Zealand, the hosts, have been in a slight slump of form, having won only one out of the five preceding encounters. In fact, it has been more than six months since they last played the shortest format of the game, which might pose its own challenges to get acclimatised to the dimension of 20-over cricket. However, playing at home, they will try to take advantage and make a winning start.
India, on the other hand, recently drew the home series against the Caribbeans 2-2, following their clean sweep over Afghanistan in the New Delhi T20Is. In between, they also won the Asian Games gold medal, showing the great amount of form and confidence they carry currently. In a bid to take an early lead into the five-match series, the Shreyas Iyer-led side will look to keep their best foot forward.

Hagley Oval, Christchurch: Pitch Report
Out of the five most recent encounters played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, only once has a chasing team come out victorious. Going by historic record, the team winning the toss on Thursday should look to bat first and put up a strong total on the board, since the pitch is expected to get better for bowling as the match progresses. Weather is unlikely to interrupt the happening of the match, according to reports.

NZ vs IND: Probable Best Performers of the Match
Probable Best Batter: Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek Sharma has been in some sensational form for the Men in Blue of late and has stamped his authority as one of the most attacking opening batters in T20 cricket right now. This will be the first time that Abhishek will play for India in New Zealand, and given the smaller boundary dimensions and batting-friendly tracks, Abhishek will be hoping to enjoy his time on Thursday.
Probable Best Bowler: Mitchell Santner
Skilled spinner and New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner has often proved to be troublesome to face for the Indian batters. That is expected to happen once again when he leads his team and marks his run-up with the ball. His variations and daring to flight the ball even on batting-friendly tracks lures batters into miscuing big shots and resulting in breakthroughs for his side. Thus, Santner is the one to watch out for.
