Mumbai Indians are receiving trade inquiries from several IPL franchises regarding all-rounder Hardik Pandya, with one particular franchise understood
to be pursuing the matter more keenly than the rest. The 32-year-old remains contracted to Mumbai Indians, and conversations involving Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders have already been held, though those are not the only clubs in the picture.
According to reports, the situation could become clearer within the next three to four weeks. The trading window is presently open and will shut one week before the mid-December auction in Goa. It will then reopen a week after the auction concludes and remain active until four weeks before the season gets under way. Franchises must also factor in the November 15 retention deadline, which leaves little room for delay.
Mumbai Indians, for their part, are not feeling pressed to act. The franchise is taking its time to weigh all available options before agreeing to any deal, according to Cricbuzz.
Why has a Pandya trade become a talking point?
Pandya's two seasons leading Gujarat Titans remain the benchmark against which his subsequent IPL record is measured. He guided the Titans to the title in 2022 and returned the following year to take them to the final in 2023. His captaincy tenure at Mumbai Indians did not yield comparable outcomes, and that contrast has fuelled the trade conversation.
His current availability adds another layer of uncertainty. Pandya has been absent from competitive cricket since the conclusion of the IPL season and sustained an injury that kept him out of the India A squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia A, which will get underway on October 6. Franchises considering a trade will be watching his recovery closely before committing.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken publicly about Pandya's value to the national side, highlighting his capacity to contribute with the bat at a brisk rate and to bowl with genuine pace. That endorsement from the national setup ensures Pandya retains considerable appeal as a trade target despite his mixed run with the Mumbai-based franchise.
Which franchises are in discussions with Mumbai Indians?
Mumbai Indians have engaged in talks with more than one franchise, with Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders among those confirmed to have been in contact. The identity of the franchise showing the sharpest interest has not been disclosed.
The CSK situation carries a degree of complexity. Zaheer Khan is understood to be in a senior role at Chennai Super Kings, and his long association with Mumbai Indians introduces an element that could influence how negotiations between the two clubs develop. Whether that connection assists or complicates a potential deal is not yet clear.
With the November 15 retention deadline drawing closer and the Goa auction scheduled for mid-December, any franchise intent on acquiring Pandya through the trade route will need to accelerate its approach. Mumbai Indians appear content to listen to offers without feeling compelled to reach a conclusion quickly.
