Gautam Gambhir addressed the media ahead of India's second Test against Sri Lanka, scheduled to begin on August 23, 2026, in Colombo. The series stands
at 1-0 in India's favour following their 165-run victory in the first Test at Galle. Shubman Gill captains the Indian side for this assignment as the team navigates a period of transition with the departures of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Gambhir made clear his priorities during the press conference, emphasising that external metrics hold no bearing on his decision-making process. He stated that his focus remains solely on achieving tangible success on the field rather than managing perception or engagement metrics.
"My job is to win trophies, not views and likes. That's all what I care for," Gambhir said in a pre-match post conference.
He further added that rankings do not influence his approach, noting that India has played reasonable Test cricket since the England tour and are not struggling.
Player development and backing young talent
The head coach's philosophy centres on backing players through ups and downs rather than making hasty decisions based on short-term results. Gambhir stressed that selection cannot be determined by one or two matches alone, as players require longer rope to develop and prove their worth.
"There will be ups and downs in cricket, and we need to back our players and give them longer rope, and it's not based on one or two matches," Gambhir added.
This approach has been evident in India's squad management, particularly with the emergence of young spinner Manav Suthar, who claimed 10 wickets in Galle in his second Test.
Bowling strategy and pitch conditions
On bowling combinations for the second Test, Gambhir acknowledged that Kuldeep Yadav remains a good bowler and that the final selection would depend on the captain's assessment of conditions and requirements. The decision to include or exclude specific bowlers reflects the broader strategy of assembling the strongest possible attack for each match.
"We will try to field the best bowling attack that can get us 20 wickets. Kuldeep is a good bowler and sometimes it's up to the captain as well," Gambhir noted.
The head coach expressed satisfaction with the quality of cricket at Galle, describing it as a good Test cricket pitch where India enjoyed playing.
The ideal length of Test series
Gambhir also shared his views on the format of Test series, stating that a three-Test series is ideal as it allows for proper turnaround time and recovery. He explained that India manages bodies well and provides optional practices and rest for bowlers, preventing teams from making a complete comeback if they lose the first Test.
"Three-Test series is ideal. Short turnaround is fine, we know how to manage our bodies and recover. We give optional practices and rest bowlers. I feel three Test series is ideal," Gambhir concluded.
He added that in a two-Test series, the maximum the trailing team can achieve is a draw, which shapes the strategic approach to each match.
