India and New Zealand are set to open their five-match T20I series on October 22, 2026, at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The full tour also includes five ODIs
and two Test matches.
India arrive having drawn their previous T20I series 2-2 against the West Indies at home. In T20I head-to-head meetings,New Zealand lead 17-11 across 31 fixtures, with 3 no-results, making this series a significant opportunity for Shreyas Iyer's side to shift the balance.
1. Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek Sharma is expected to open the batting in the first T20I at Hagley Oval. Over his last nine T20Is, he has accumulated 321 runs at an average of 35.66 and a strike rate of 219.86, placing him among the most aggressive openers in the format at present.
His ability to attack from the first ball can put New Zealand's new-ball bowlers under immediate pressure during the powerplay. Handling the swing and extra bounce that New Zealand pitches typically offer will be a key test for him in Christchurch. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to remain on the bench, meaning Sharma retains his place at the top of the order for the series opener.
2. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer leads India for this series and is also one of their most important batting contributors in the middle order. Across his international career, he has accumulated 1,694 T20I runs at an average of 31.96 and a strike rate of 141.40. Iyer carried strong momentum into this tour, having scored 181 runs across four innings against the West Indies in the preceding series.
With a lot of questions surrounding hsi captaincy record, Iyer would be hoping to put doubts to the bed with a series victory, continuing his brilliant form with the bat since he has taken over the leadership duties for the side.
3. Tim Seifert
Tim Seifert is New Zealand's wicketkeeper-batter and one of the most aggressive stroke-makers in their batting lineup. He has the ability to attack during the powerplay and continue that pressure into the middle overs, making him a consistent threat at the top of the order. India's spin options are expected to play a prominent role in this series, and Seifert's willingness to take on spinners makes him a particularly important player to watch.
Seifert has had a stellar year in 2026, finishing as the Black Caps' leading run-scorer in the 2026 T20 World Cup, and was named Player of the Tournament in the 2026 Men's Hundred, playing a key role in Manchester Super Giants' title triumph.
