What happened? Rohit falls for duck against NZ

• Rohit Sharma dismissed for a duck in the first ODI at Auckland
• The opener's first ODI nought in 39 innings since October 2023
• Arshdeep Singh took 4 wickets as India chases 187 target

Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck off just six balls during India's chase of 187 against New Zealand in the first ODI of the series at Eden Park in Auckland

on November 4, 2026. Kyle Jamieson drew the miscued shot from Rohit off a full-length delivery, and Mitchell Santner completed the catch at mid-off, sending the India opener back without troubling the scorers.

The dismissal was Rohit's first ODI duck in three years, with his previous nought having come on October 7, 2023, against Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup opener at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Between those two dismissals, Rohit had batted through 39 innings without registering a duck. It was also his first-ever ODI duck against New Zealand, and the 17th of his ODI career overall. He was playing his 292nd ODI when the wicket fell.

India opted to bowl first and restricted New Zealand to 187. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets, while Gurnoor Brar contributed 3 wickets to keep the target within reach. Anshul Kamboj produced a remarkable spell of 10-2-22-2, finishing with an economy rate of 2.20. That figure matched the joint-best economy rate recorded by an Indian fast bowler in ODIs since 2005, equalling Jasprit Bumrah's figures of 10-1-22-4 against Zimbabwe in 2016.

What was Rohit's form heading into the Auckland ODI?

Despite the early exit at Eden Park, Rohit had been in strong touch across ODI cricket in 2026. In 13 ODIs during the calendar year, he accumulated 604 runs at an average of 46.46, including two centuries and three fifties.

India's most recent ODI series before this New Zealand assignment was at home against West Indies, where Rohit scored 101 and 92 across the matches, with a further contribution of 32 in the series. That run of form underlined how out of character the Auckland duck was for the opener.

When did Rohit last score a duck before November 4, 2026?

Rohit's previous ODI duck arrived on October 7, 2023, in the World Cup opener against Australia at MA Chidambaram Stadium. That dismissal remained his last nought across 39 subsequent ODI innings before the Eden Park match.

In the period between those two ducks, Rohit recorded 5 ODI centuries, a stretch that highlighted how rarely he had failed to get off the mark at the international level. The Auckland dismissal, his 17th ODI duck in 292 matches, was also a first against New Zealand in the format, adding a fresh statistical footnote to a long and productive ODI career.
