The Women's Premier League franchises have submitted their retention and release lists ahead of the WPL 2027 auction, which is scheduled to take place
at Kochi's Grand Hyatt on October 28. The tournament itself is set to begin on January 14 and is scheduled to run up until February 07, marking a relatively early start for the league this time round.
Among the released players, several Indian names stand out as particularly surprising. The Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have both parted ways with experienced and decorated Indian cricketers, sending them into the auction pool.
Here are 3 most shocking Indians released before the WPL 2027 auction:
3. Gunalan Kamalini (Mumbai Indians Women)
G. Kamalini is among the six players released by the Mumbai Indians ahead of the WPL 2027 auction. The wicketkeeper-batter had been retained by the franchise ahead of the previous mega auction, making this decision a notable one. However, she is likely to be a crucial part of India's Under-19 World Cup campaign, a tournament that will clash with the league, and hence, the franchise did not retain her.
Kamalini was part of India's Asia Cup-winning campaign and also featured in the Asian Games gold medal-winning campaign in Japan in September 2026. Despite that decorated run in Indian colours, Mumbai Indians have chosen not to retain her. The franchise has held on to Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, Melie Kerr and Nicola Carey, among others. The full MI release list also includes Saika Ishaque, Milly Illingworth, Kranthi Reddy, Poonam Khemnar and Triveni Vasistha.
2. Sneh Rana (Delhi Capitals Women)
Delhi Capitals have released Sneh Rana, an experienced off-spin bowling all-rounder who has been a regular presence at both domestic and international levels. Rana was part of the Delhi Capitals squad, and her exit is one of six releases made by the franchise.
Delhi Capitals have retained players including Deepti Sharma, Harleen Deol, Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield, Pratika Rawal, Sophie Ecclestone and Tara Norris, among others. Other notable departures from the DC camp include Lizelle Lee and Alana King. Rana will now enter the WPL 2027 auction pool alongside several other released players.
1. Shweta Sehrawat (UP Warriorz)
Shweta Sehrawat's release by UP Warriorz was another notable development ahead of the WPL 2027 Auction. The young batter was the only player retained by the franchise ahead of the 2026 mega auction, making her release a particularly surprising decision.
Sehrawat has scored 307 runs in 26 innings for UP Warriorz in the WPL. However, she has not been able to establish herself as a regular contributor in the franchise's playing XI. The Warriorz have now decided to make changes to their squad and have released Sehrawat along with several other players, including experienced names such as Asha Sobhana and Deandra Dottin.
