Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently gave a green signal to a proposal by the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) to construct a world-class sports complex in Surya
City, Bommasandra, featuring a cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 80,000. Once completed, it will become the second-largest cricket stadium in India after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which can accommodate 1,32,000 spectators.
The INR 1,650 crore project will be fully funded by the KHB without financial support from the state government. Spread over 100 acres, the proposed complex will provide to both indoor and outdoor sports. Apart from the cricket stadium, it will include facilities for eight indoor and eight outdoor sports, state-of-the-art gyms, training centres, swimming pools, guest houses, hostels, three-star and five-star hotels, and a convention hall capable of hosting international events.
Govt will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location: CM Siddaramaiah
This decision was made after the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 victory celebrations on June 4, which claimed 11 lives and left several injured. The Justice John Michael Cunha Commission, which investigated the incident, concluded that the 32,000-capacity stadium, spread over just 17 acres, was unsuitable for large-scale events. He also recommended shifting them to a more spacious location with better facilities and parking. The demand for moving the stadium to the city’s outskirts has witnessed a spike since the tragedy.
"The government has not done anything wrong. This incident is saddening, but no misstep was taken by the administration. Legal action has been taken against those found guilty, so there is no question of embarrassment for the government. The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location. Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government, the Karnataka CM had said earlier.
Bengaluru receives multiple sports infrastructure proposals
The Chief Minister confirmed that five police officers had been suspended in connection with the mishap, while the intelligence chief and his political secretary were replaced.
"Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced. The case has been taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken," he added.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru is witnessing multiple sports infrastructure proposals. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has invited tenders to build a modern stadium in Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Layout on the city’s northern outskirts, while the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) is planning a sports city in Bidadi, with Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar proposing it should be capable of hosting the Olympic Games.
