Delhi Capitals (DC) finished fifth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, narrowly missing out on a playoffs' berth but showing signs of progress under
a settled core. Ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, the franchise largely chose continuity, retaining most of their key players and making only a few changes to the squad. One of their notable acquisitions was Prithvi Shaw, who was picked up for INR 75 lakh.
While the Maharashtra cricketer's talent is unquestionable, his recent inconsistency and DC’s already crowded top-order raise questions about the move. The franchise could arguably have targeted players who better addressed their squad balance. In this feature, CricTracker analyses three such players that the Delhi-based side could have picked over the right-handed opening batter.
Here are 3 players DC could have bought over Prithvi Shaw
Sarfaraz Khan
Sarfaraz Khan could have been a more suitable option for DC, particularly given their need for stability in the middle order. One of the most consistent performers in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz has earned a reputation for scoring quickly while also anchoring an innings when required. His ability to handle both spin and pace makes him a valuable asset in the middle overs.
Sarfaraz has featured in the IPL for three teams and has accumulated 585 runs in 37 innings. Interestingly, his last IPL appearance came in 2023 for Delhi Capitals themselves. With DC already boasting multiple opening options, Sarfaraz’s inclusion could have strengthened the middle order rather than adding another opener, potentially making the batting unit more balanced.
Venkatesh Iyer
Another player DC could have targeted is Venkatesh Iyer, who eventually went to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for INR 7.00 crore. Iyer enjoyed a successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) over five seasons, scoring 1,468 runs and contributing with the ball as well. Although he endured a quieter season in 2025 after being bought for a hefty price at the mega-auction, his overall skill set remains valuable.
A left-handed batter who can open or bat in the middle order, Iyer also offers a seam-bowling option to the defending champions. Meanwhile, DC could have benefitted from his all-round abilities, particularly alongside Axar Patel, adding depth and flexibility to their line-up.
Michael Bracewell
New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell would have been another smart option for DC. A regular for the BlackCaps across international formats, Bracewell brings experience, leadership qualities, and versatility. He previously featured in the IPL in 2023 for RCB and has since grown into a dependable spin-bowling all-rounder.
Bracewell’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball, especially on spin-friendly Indian surfaces, could have added significant value to DC’s squad. His international exposure and calm temperament would have further strengthened the team’s balance.
