India's T20 cricket has produced memorable highs, but a difficult run in 2026 has brought several structural concerns into focus. The men's side suffered
a 2-0 whitewash in Ireland and then conceded a 3-0 lead to England, including a nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20I, before the BCCI announced it would meet to review the team's performance after the England tour ended on July 19, 2026.
These results have prompted a closer look at the areas where India must sharpen up if they are to remain competitive in the format. Three concerns stand out above the rest.
Here are three areas where India must improve in T20 cricket:
1. Sixth bowling option
India's five frontline bowlers at the T20 World Cup were Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel. Shivam Dube served as the sixth option, with Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Rinku Singh contributing occasionally. The arrangement left the side exposed whenever a primary bowler struggled.
Dube's returns as the sixth bowler were not convincing. In 9.2 overs he conceded 124 runs at an economy rate of 13.28, though he did take five wickets. Faf du Plessis observed that opposition teams would view India's sixth bowling option as a pressure point, suggesting sides would look to manoeuvre the game toward those overs, particularly on good batting surfaces. Anil Kumble added that on a flat pitch there would be challenges, and that India would ideally want the comfort of playing eight batters rather than going in with seven batters and five specialist bowlers. Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy are among the all-rounders who could fill that role, though both have had inconsistent outings with the ball in recent matches.
2. Fielding standards
Dropped catches and sloppy ground fielding have often cost India crucial momentum in high-pressure games. To address this issue, the team needs to focus heavily on catching drills, boundary-saving exercises, and direct-hit run-out practice during training camps. Improving fielding standards can also boost the team’s confidence in tight situations and prevent opponents from gaining valuable extra runs. Saving 10 to 15 runs per game and holding on to difficult catches could make a significant difference in close contests. A sharper fielding unit would not only create additional wicket-taking opportunities but also help India maintain pressure and improve their chances of winning crucial matches.
3. Batting structure and anchor role
An ultra-aggressive approach from the first ball can sometimes lead to sudden batting collapses, especially on tricky or slow pitches. To address this, India should identify a composed batter capable of rotating the strike, absorbing early pressure, and batting deep into the innings. Having a reliable anchor at one end can provide stability while allowing the stroke-makers around them to play their natural attacking game. This balance between aggression and composure can help India avoid unnecessary collapses and maximise their scoring potential. A dependable anchor also gives the team greater flexibility to adapt to different pitch conditions and match situations.
