The five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are enduring a disappointing start to their Indian Premier League 2026campaign. Having lost three consecutive
matches, both their batting and bowling units have failed to deliver consistently.
Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK are also feeling the absence of MS Dhoni, who is sidelined due to a calf strain. With a relatively inexperienced XI, the team is struggling to find rhythm. To bounce back, CSK must address their weaknesses quickly and make some key tactical changes.
Here are the three things CSK must do to return to winning ways:
Bring in Dewald Brevis if fit
CSK should look to include Dewald Brevisin the playing XI if he is fit. The young South African was in sublime form during IPL 2025, scoring 225 runs in six matches at an impressive strike rate of 180. He is known for his ability to clear boundaries against both pace, spin and can inject much-needed aggression into CSK’s middle order.
His presence in the middle overs can help accelerate the scoring rate, especially at a time when the team has struggled to maintain momentum. Adding Brevis would not only strengthen the batting lineup but also provide a dynamic option to counter opposition bowlers.
Move Ruturaj Gaikwad to No.3
A tactical reshuffle in the batting order could benefit CSK. Currently opening the innings, Ruturaj Gaikwadcould be more effective at No. 3, where he can anchor the innings and stabilise the middle order. Promoting Ayush Mhatre to open alongside Sanju Samson could provide them with confidence and freedom to play their natural game.
Gaikwad, being one of the more experienced batters in the lineup, can then guide the innings, rotate strike efficiently, and build partnerships. This move would create a better balance between aggression at the top and stability in the middle.
Replace Noor Ahmad with Akeal Hosein
CSK should consider replacing Noor Ahmadwith Akeal Hosein to strengthen their bowling attack. Noor was exceptional in IPL 2025, finishing as one of the leading wicket-takers, but he has struggled in the early matches this season as batters have adapted well to his variations.
In contrast, Akeal Hosein offers a different dimension with his left-arm spin and better control. Additionally, Hosein can contribute with the bat, adding depth to the lower order. This change could help CSK regain control in the middle overs and provide more balance to the side.
