The Indian Premier League (IPL) is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and commercially successful sporting leagues in the world. As the tournament’s
popularity and valuation have grown over the years, the prize money on offer has also seen significant revisions.
When the IPL was launched in 2008, inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) received a prize purse of INR 4.8 crore. As the league expanded and generated greater revenues, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) increased the champions’ reward to INR 10 crore, a figure that remained in place from 2010 to 2013.
The prize money was revised once again in 2014, with the winning team receiving INR 15 crore during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Another increase followed in 2016, taking the champions’ purse to INR 20 crore, where it stayed until 2019.
However, the financial uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the BCCI to reduce the prize money to INR 10 crore for the 2020 season. As conditions improved, the board restored the champions’ reward to INR 20 crore from 2021 onwards.
Since then, the IPL-winning team has continued to receive INR 20 crore in prize money, underlining the tournament’s stature as one of the richest and most lucrative franchise-based T20 cricket leagues in the world.

IPL 2026 Prize money breakdown
The BCCI has allocated a total of INR 46.5 crore for IPL 2026 in total. Out of which, the winning team will receive the amount of INR 20 crore, whereas the runners-up will get INR 13 crore. Not just the finalists, the team who lost Qualifier 2, which was Rajasthan Royals this season, will be receiving INR 7 crore, while Sunrisers Hyderabadwill be rewarded with the prize money of INR 6.5 crore for playing the eliminator.
