India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav provided a positive update on Shreyas Iyer’s health after the middle-order batter suffered a spleen injury during
the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The incident, which occurred while Iyer was taking a catch to dismiss Alex Carey, saw him leave the field and later be hospitalized. Fortunately, Iyer is stable and has been discharged from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Sydney hospital.
After sustaining an impact injury, the 30-year-old was immediately rushed to the hospital, where scans revealed a laceration to his spleen. The situation was initially serious, with reports indicating a sharp drop in his vitals before the BCCI medical team helped stabilize him. Speaking to reporters ahead of the first T20I against Australia in Canberra, Suryakumar shared an update about his teammate’s condition.
"When I got to know about his injury, I called our physio Kamlesh Jain to get the update. Iyer has been replying on phone now which means he is stable. Doctors are there with him, he's speaking with people too, so it's looking good. He will be monitored for the next few days," he said.
Surya, who is leading the T20I team in Australia, also praised Iyer’s fighting spirit, calling him a rare talent. He also looked optimistic about Iyer's recovery and revealed of returning to India along with him.
"It is unfortunate what happened and these cases are very rare. But rare things happen to rare talent like Shreyas Iyer. By god's grace, everything is fine. Sath hi le jayenge usko ghar (We will take with him to India after the series)," Surya added.
According to reports from Sydney, the right-handed batter has been moved out of the ICU and continues to recover steadily. A BCCI source confirmed that while he remains under observation, his condition has improved significantly.
The BCCI’s medical team has been closely coordinating with doctors in Sydney to monitor Iyer’s progress. Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of the ICC Medical Committee, BCCI Medical Panel, and the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Centre for Sports Medicine, was sent Iyer’s medical reports, and credited the on-ground medical staff for their quick response, which was instrumental in stabilizing the cricketer’s condition.
