A five-match T20I series that concluded at Hamilton on November 1, 2026 ended with India claiming a 3-2 victory over New Zealand, but the result was only
part of the story. Both sides rewrote the record books for run-scoring between two teams in T20 internationals, producing aggregate tallies that have never been matched in the format's history.
The headline statistical achievement belongs to India, whose 2,266 runs against New Zealand across all T20Is played in the 2026 calendar year set a new all-time mark for the most runs scored by one team against any single opponent in T20Is within a calendar year. New Zealand's own return of 2,207 runs against India in the same period placed them second on that same list, meaning the top two positions are now occupied by the two sides from this very series. For context, the third-highest figure on that list is 2,109 runs, scored by Cambodia against Indonesia in 2025.

How did the series unfold across five matches?
Wellington on October 27, 2026, was the venue where India effectively sealed the contest, winning the third T20I to move 3-0 ahead with two matches remaining. Abhishek Sharma was the centrepiece of that victory, striking 113 off 38 balls to equal the joint-second-fastest T20I century by an Indian batter. At the top of the order, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed 45 off 23 balls alongside Sharma in a blistering opening stand. India's powerplay total in that match reached 118 without loss, a joint record in T20Is, and the side brought up fifty in just 2.2 overs, which is also a joint record in the format.
New Zealand pulled one back in the fourth match before winning the fifth T20I at Hamilton by seven wickets to close the series at 3-2. Tim Seifert anchored the chase with 93 off 50 balls, while Adam Milne's four wickets for 19 runs earned him the Player of the Match award for that final game. The two victories in the closing stages gave New Zealand consolation, but India's 3-2 triumph confirmed their dominance across the series as a whole.
Who were the standout performers across the series?
Glenn Phillips was the dominant run-scorer of the contest, finishing with 341 runs across the five matches. That tally is the most by any batter in a bilateral T20I series, and his consistency throughout earned him the Player of the Series award. Abhishek Sharma finished as the second-highest run-scorer overall, accumulating 197 runs for India across the five games, with his century in the third T20I at Wellington the defining individual innings of the series.
With the ball, Mitchell Santner was New Zealand's most productive wicket-taker, claiming nine wickets across the series. Arshdeep Singh led India's bowling effort with six wickets. The performances of both sides across all five matches explain why the 2026-27 series generated such unprecedented aggregate run tallies in T20I cricket, with the top two spots on the all-time calendar-year list now belonging exclusively to this contest.
