The Sri Lankan's effort was particularly impressive given the difficult conditions, having already emerged as the only javelin thrower to breach the 90-metre mark this season.
Although Neeraj was not at his absolute best, the silver medal marked another consistent performance from the Tokyo Olympic champion, whose throw on Friday marginally improved on the 85.69m effort that earned him fourth place at the Doha Diamond League in June, which was his only previous competition of the season.
The bigger surprise, however, came from Yashvir.
Entering the competition with a personal best of 83.72m, the young Indian saved his finest throw for last. Under immense pressure, Yashvir unleashed an 85.41m effort in the sixth round, setting a new personal best and vaulting into the bronze medal position to cap a breakthrough performance on the international stage.
