The order has been awarded by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul and Spiti district, for setting up the facility at Kaza Soma, and will be executed on a turnkey basis.
The scope of work includes development of a full-fledged ice hockey rink along with allied infrastructure such as a 500 kW solar power backup system, CCTV surveillance, lighting systems and other related accessories.
Ice hockey, though a niche sport in India, has a presence in high-altitude regions such as Ladakh, Lahaul-Spiti and parts of Himachal Pradesh, where natural climatic conditions allow the sport to be played.
India is currently placed in the lower tiers of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rankings and primarily competes in Division III tournaments, with limited access to modern training and competition infrastructure.
The project also marks a change for ITI, spanning beyond its traditional telecom manufacturing business into infrastructure and system integration projects.
