West Bengal's Feast
As election trends solidified in West Bengal, BJP workers and supporters erupted in joyous celebrations, with food taking center stage. At party offices
in Kolkata and beyond, traditional Bengali delicacies like fish curry, rice, dal, and specific preparations like fish head curry and katla fish curry were generously served. These communal meals fostered a sense of shared triumph. Celebrations in areas like Alipore featured richer fare such as chicken biryani, alongside fish dishes and the ever-popular jalebi. The streets also buzzed with activity, as workers distributed sweets like rosogolla, laddoos, and sandesh, with mishti doi also being a popular choice. A notable inclusion was jhalmuri, served in paper cones, a snack that had gained symbolic importance during the campaign due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction at a roadside stall. This culinary engagement was also a strategic response to campaign narratives that had questioned dietary freedom under a BJP government, with these food celebrations underscoring the party's commitment to preserving cultural practices.
National Culinary Echoes
The wave of celebratory feasting extended beyond West Bengal, permeating the BJP's national presence. In Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her cabinet ministers joined in by sharing jhalmuri and rosogolla, symbolizing the party's performance. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari marked the occasion at his residence by cutting a rosogolla cake, a sweet gesture reflecting the positive trends. Leader Virendra Sachdeva opted for mishti doi to commemorate the party's successes in both West Bengal and Assam. The BJP headquarters in New Delhi became a hub of continuous culinary activity throughout the day. Party workers and visitors were treated to an extensive spread prepared in batches, encompassing popular dishes like aloo poori, poha, sandwiches, jalebi, dal tadka, kadhi pakoda, parwal aloo, rice, and papad. An array of traditional sweets, including rasgulla and mishti doi, were also abundant. To complement the meals, refreshing beverages like lassi and fresh fruits were provided, with arrangements meticulously scaled to cater to hundreds of people.
Bihar's Litti Legacy
Food has consistently played a significant role in political celebrations, as seen during the NDA's victory in Bihar last year. When the coalition surpassed the 200-seat mark in the Bihar assembly polls, jubilant celebrations erupted at the offices of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (United). Buckets brimming with jalebis and the iconic litti chokha were distributed among supporters in Patna, creating a festive atmosphere. The streets outside JD(U) offices resonated with the beat of drums and featured large posters of Nitish Kumar, while groups of supporters marched with the party's symbol, chanting slogans. In preparation for a Bihar-style celebration at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, a menu featuring sattu paratha, baingan chokha, jalebi, and litti chokha was prepared for party workers. Meanwhile, in Mokama, similar culinary tributes, including rasgulla and litti chokha, were reported at the residence of RJD leader Veena Devi during the counting in her constituency, highlighting the regional significance of these dishes in political milestones.
Sweet Gestures, Bitter Jabs
Election results have often inspired unique food-related gestures, some celebratory and others tinged with political commentary. Following the BJP's strong showing in the Haryana Assembly elections in 2024, party workers sent jalebis to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's office in Delhi. This symbolic act served as a sweet, yet pointed, acknowledgment of the electoral outcome and the Congress party's defeat. In a different context, during the Maharashtra civic elections, the term 'rasmalai' became a focal point for political jibes. BJP MPs PC Mohan and Tejasvi Surya referenced rasmalai on social media to signify the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance's robust performance. This was a direct response to earlier remarks by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, who had used 'rasmalai' in a political jab targeting BJP leader K. Annamalai during campaign interactions. PC Mohan posted an image of rasmalai on X (formerly Twitter) alluding to the election results, while Tejasvi Surya described the outcome as a 'sweet rasmalai victory.' K. Annamalai later defended his campaign statements and congratulated the alliance, while also critiquing identity-based political narratives.
