Weather System Explained
The recent shift in weather patterns across Maharashtra is attributed to evolving synoptic conditions, according to IMD scientist S D Sanap. These conditions indicate
a potential influx of moisture from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Concurrently, a trough extending from Madhya Pradesh southward into Madhya Maharashtra is contributing to the atmospheric instability. This confluence of factors suggests a likelihood of rainfall activity, particularly around May 7-8. These phenomena are characteristic of pre-monsoon periods, where a combination of moisture availability and upper-air troughs can instigate localized thunderstorm activity rather than widespread, uniform precipitation across the state. The forecast highlights that this atmospheric setup is a common occurrence during this transitional season.
Regions Under Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for several districts in Maharashtra, anticipating thundershowers. Specifically, South Madhya Maharashtra and parts of Marathwada, including areas like Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Beed, Latur, and Dharashiv, are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. These regions can also expect moderate rainfall and gusty winds, with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph, particularly around May 7th and 8th. Beyond these core areas, the ghat sections of Kolhapur, Satara, and Pune are also predicted to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Furthermore, coastal districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg might witness light rain or thunderstorms towards the conclusion of this forecast period.
Pune's Dry Outlook
Despite the widespread pre-monsoon activity expected across neighboring regions of Maharashtra, Pune city is projected to remain dry. The IMD's forecast, as of Monday, indicates no significant rainfall activity for Pune in the upcoming days. This is in contrast to surrounding areas that are anticipated to experience thundershowers. Meanwhile, the coastal belts, including Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad, are expected to endure hot and humid conditions, with no significant relief from rain forecast for these areas during the specified period.
